If your nonprofit doesn’t have its own dedicated YouTube channel, stop reading this right now and set one up. Yes, it’s that important. YouTube is a fabulous way to keep your supporters involved and help spread the word about your cause. You can encourage people to make their own videos of their volunteer experience or ask them to explain why your organization is important to them in 15 or 30 second bits. With so many video cameras on cell phones, not to mention the popularity of lower-cost video cameras like the Flip Video (who, by the way, launched their own user-generated campaign back in November), it’s a perfect opportunity to take advantage of your supporters’ passions and creativity.
In addition to your own channel, Nonprofit Technology News’ Lorna Doone Brewer takes it one step further by suggesting the addition of YouTubeDirect to your homepage. This lets you eliminate the middle man and allow people to upload their videos directly to your website (of course, videos won’t be published unless you approve them). Make sure they also include their videos on any fundraising pages that are active.
